Chapter 3

The Eerie Glow (Team Go Begins, Part 3)

"There we were", Shego kept saying. "Our parents died less than 24 hours ago in a terrifying manner, which explained why we were awake till long after midnight, even though we were exausted from all the stress of the day."

Meanwhile, it was nearly 1 a.m.. The only ones who could sleep were the twins, but even they didn't sleep too well.
"I like Mr Pink somehow", Hego said without a clear reason.
Mego, who just fell asleep for one second, mumbled: "What? Who do you like?"
"Mr Pink. The director of..."
"Yes, I know who you are talking about. But why do you do this now?"
"I thought about the last day and so on. What Mr Pink did with this...this bully, impressed me alot."
"Me too", Shego said.
Hego and Mego got up and asked: "Seriously?"

"Even back then I was kinda reserved with my enthusiasm."

"Yes. He did a good job with telling off this Dennis-guy."
Mego laid back again with a smile. Hego blinked, a little confused.
"No, I didn't meant it that way. He...okay, he told him off, but only because he cares."
"Was a cool telling off anyway."
"There was nothing cool about it, Sister. You should take his cue from him and begin to care more for the people around you." Hego dropped himself back in his bed. "Yes, helping other people. That's what I want to do."
"Do you know what you can start with, big brother? You could be quiet. So you help me with falling asleep."
"Okay, I'm sorry."

"It made me angry, that my brother would rather think about Mr Pink than about his...our parents. Later I realized that he probably just wanted to take his mind off his worries. As I finally managed to sleep, I had a dream. I will never forget it, because it was about only one thing. It was about fire."

The fire was everywhere. There was no escape. Little Shego could run anywhere, but the fire was there, before she was.
But suddenly a clown jumped out of the fire, squeezed his red clownnose, which made a honking noise, and called: "Hey, hey, hey, the bananas want stones, but tomorrow it's too cold to bite your nails!"

"Okay, the dream was about fire and a nonsense-talking clown."

The clown leaped backwards into the fire. Just one second later, an elephant spread his head out of the flames. The fire couldn't harm him as less than it could hurt the clown.
He looked in Shego's eyes and said: "Fish."

"Well, fire, a clown and a talking elephant."

When the elephant jumped right over Shego, he caused an air draft, which made the fire spread to the little girl. Her hands were burning. It didn't hurt, but nevertheless she screamed as loud as she could and woke finally up.

"For a few, short seconds, I was as happy as any other human being, who woke up from a nightmare and realizes, that everything is okay. Then, when I went to wipe the sweat from my forehead, I noticed that my hands were really on fire."

Shego looked shocked at her hands, which were surrounded by green flames. Even now there was no sign of pain, but if you have a good reason to yell at 3 a.m. like you were...well...burning, you should do it.
Of course Shego didn't really think about something like this, when she screamed as loud as she could and aroused not only her brothers, but also every single person in the building suddenly from their sleep.
Hego was the first one up, who came to his little sister's bed.

"What happened?" he asked.
When Shego tried to answer him, she noticed, that the fire around her hands had already gone out.
"M...my hands. I had...just a nightmare."
"You were not the only one", Mego mumbled sleepy, when he sat down next to his sister. "Can I go back to sleep now?"
"Could you please be nicer to her? You know she doesn't feel too good."
"It's okay", Shego said silent. "I'll just go to sleep again."
Just then, the door burst open, Mr Pink put on the light and asked: "What happened?"
"Everything's under control. She had just a nightmare."
A group of kids, Dennis was in it too, had assembled themselves behind Mr Pink. A few of them were giggling.
"Hey, stop that", Mr Pink said to them. "Just because she didn't cry in her blanket like you did, but screamed like she was hunted by Freddy Krüger himself, when she has a nightmare, doesn't mean that you can laugh. Go back to bed, before I start to tell everyone who the real crybabies are. Because it's all of you." After the kids went back to their rooms, without saying anything, Mr Pink turned back to Shego, Mego and Hego. "Everything alright again?"
"Yes, I'm feeling good."
"Okay. Before I forget it, breakfast is from 6 to 8. I wish you a good night. If anything is wrong, just scream."
With these words he turned off the light and closed the door.
"I'm going back to bed", declared Mego as he did exactly that.
Hego took the hand of his little sister and asked her: "Are you really okay?"
"Yes", she answered and let off his hand.
"Good, while we're stil awake, do you need anything?"
"No."
"Alright, sis. Good night."
Shego sounded a "Hm" and laid back again. Hego covered her with her blanket and went back in his bed.

"I've always been the strongest one in my family. I never really needed the help or support from others."

Just a few minutes later, Shego got up and climbed silent in Hego's bed. She slept there quiet till the next morning.

"Will you show me the film, before you release it? It just came to my mind that the people maybe shouldn't know everything I tell you here in front of the camera. Remember that I can still do bad things to you, if I don't like your film."

The next morning. After an suprisingly good breakfast, the siblings were waiting together for Mr Pink, but instead of him, only Dennis showed up. He placed himself with a dumb looking smile in front of Shego, who didn't pay much attension to him. For some reason she was exceedingly fascinated from the pattern of carpet, whereas Hego watched Dennis, always ready to help his sister, if necessary.
"Hey, you", said Dennis.
Shego looked up slowly, groaned in an annoyed manner and vsrried on looking at the really fascinating carpet.
"Are you still afraid of the boogeyman?" Dennis continued and broadend his smile with the delusion of making an incredibley smart joke at the expense of Shego.
"Huh?" she replied, without looking up.
"Uhm...the boogeyman. Because you were screaming, last night. You baby! You're scared of the dark, aren't you?"
Shego just said calmly: "No. Because I know that there is no boogeyman." She lifted her head up and looked past Dennis. "Am I right, Mr Pink?"
Dennis turned around quickly, only to see that Mr Pink was somewhere else, but not here. When he looked back at Shego, he just could see, how she smiled bored, before she tried again to decypher the pattern on the carpet.
"Oh great. I got spoofed by an eight year old girl, with an incredibley lame trick."
"I'm 10. And I'm sure that this will happen to you many, many times in your life."
"I agree", said Mr Pink as he entered the room, happy. "I got no idea what you're talking about, but I agree. Are you ready? See you later, Dennis. And when I'm back, you will tell me, why you are not in school." On the way outside, Mr Pink took a look at the carpet. "Hm. When I bought the carpet, six years ago, I thought that I would be never get sick of its pattern. And really, I still love it."

"Where are we going, Mr Pink?" asked Hego inside the car.
"To Smarty Mart. Where we can get everything you need. And before you say anything, Smarty Mart has great quality, but at a lower price and because I don't get much money for you, or any other child in my orphanage as I need, this mart is the only alternative. So please don't complain about the lack of brands on the clothes, which I'm going to buy for you. It's an established fact that Smarty Mart and Club Coconut..."
"Banana", corrected Shego him.
"Yeah, whatever. The clothes are from the same manufacturer. And I know that, when you go to school again, in a few weeks, you're afraid that they will laugh at you, because of your Smarty Mart clothes and so on. But trust me. You are orphans. They expect, you to come shoeless and in dirty and riven clothes to school and beg with tears in your your eyes for more food in the cafeteria, so it doesn't matter what you are going to wear, you have to put up with stupid jokes anyway, so why not save some money? And we will use the whole day, so that you can at least choose clothes, that you like and if there's some money left, we will buy something else for you. Questions?"
"Uhm..."
"Ask them later, I have to look for some parking space, because if there is something that you can't find at Smarty Mart, it's parking space, when you need some."

"So we spent the whole day with providing us at Smarty Mart. Nothing special. When we left the market, we walked across the newspaper shelf."

Shego stopped in front of the newspapers and read the huge headlinse "The colourful killer from space! Rainbowmeteor kills parents!"
"Mr Pink!?" called Shego and he and her brothers, who didn't had noticed that her sister wasn't walking with them anymore, turned around.
"What's the matter?"
"Can I have this newspaper? And the others, where I can read about the meteor."

"And so Mr Pink brought us every day, within the next week, a pile of newspapers and magazines. It was our only chance to get to know something about the meteor, because nobody told us anything. However, we didn't find out that much. We found out that it was rainbow-coloured. They found fragments and remains, but they dissolved within a few hours. They had nothing, which they could analyze. The newspapers were content with rolling out the story of the "sad meteor-orphans", over and over. But because Mr Pink made sure that no reporter came too close to us - some say that he even pulled a gun once, but nobody was able to give proof of it - they had to made up their stories and within a week they ran out of ideas. According to this, the public lost interest. The crater has been filled with concrete and they built one of these stupid 'Bueno Nacho'-restaurants on it. Life went on for us, too. One month later, they sent us to school again."

One morning, in the breakfast-room of the orphanage. Shego and Hego ate silently their breakfast, when Mego sat down next to them.
"You won't believe the crap I dreamed tonight", he said. "I was laying in my bed, and suddenly I realized, that it was much bigger than usual."
"That's normal", Hego said, while he was chewing his bread-roll. "The rules of reality don't work in dreams. That's why things and people look different than..."
Mego chimed in.
"Yesyesyes, so I was in this huge bed and it got bigger and bigger and then I realized, that the room got bigger, too. Then I realized, that my environment didn't grow, but I was shrinking. Then I got scared of shrinking into eternity and woke up. At least I dreamed that I woke up, because I wasn't awake, when I thought I was. I was still small, but grew quickly back to my normal size. Weird, isn't it?"
"Hm. A dream", said Shego unimpressed.
"Oh, I totally forgot to tell you this. In my dream I was glowing, like I was burning."

In that moment Shego, swallowed her bread and butter wring and started coughing.

"I had forgotten my dream until that moment, in which Mego telled us his."

Hego slapped his sister soft on the back.
"Breath slowly."
When she came to breath again, she asked Mego: "Do you... (cough) was the fire green?"
"No. It was purple. Like green, it is a strange colour for fire, but purple is more beautiful. Why are you asking?"
"Because..."
Once again, Mr Pink entered the room and called: "Okay, it's time to go to the place, which you dislike more than this one! The bus is ready to go and won't wait for long, but don't think that you don't have to go to school if you miss it."
In this second jumped everybody pretty much at the same time up from their chairs and a huge pushing and shoving started, because when Mr Pink said that the bus wouldn't wait for long, it always meant that it was gone in less than a minute, if no one stepped in till then.

"I lost sight of Mego and didn't see him for the rest of the day. Unfortunately the first day of school kept me on the go, so that I forgot even his dream again and didn't care about it anymore. School is hell. And I was even lucky enough to be in the unobserved popularity - mid-table. I was one of these students, who were just there. I wasn't very much liked or hated. At least not then. The next year passed by without any major incidents. From time to time Dennis tried to make life difficult for us, but that's what he did with everyone. You could say, that our life became normal again. Until Hego came back from school, one afternoon."

A wednesday, fall 1991.
Shego sat on her bed and read a book. The twins were sleeping in their Baby-bed, when Mego came into the room.
He began immediately to tell: "Hey sis, you won't believe what..."
Then Hego came in too and interrupted him.
"You won't believe what happened to me!"
Shego threw her book on the floor and jumped with fake happiness up and down on her bed.
"Yeah, great, my brothers want to tell me something, which I know I won't care about, at the same time! I've been looking forward to this allday!"
"That's not nice", Hego said. "You gotta learn how to curb your sarcasm. That was more than disrespectful."
Shego sat down unimpressed, and tried to find the last page of her book again. Mego crossed his arms.
"Do you know what's disrespectful, too, brother? Interrupting other people!"
"I apologize, but this is important."
"How important?"
"Important enough that you must swear absolute secrecy to me."
While saying these words, he locked up the door.
"Will this be like last time, when you told us that you have a crush on the star of the cheeleadering team, but you don't have the guts to tell her?" Shego asked.
"No, better."
He went to his bed and positioned himself in front of it. The he put one hand under it - and did nothing. He mumbled some words and seemed to be nervous, but nothing else happened.
"Mego?"
"Yes, sis?"
"I hope that dullness only infests the male members of our family." "I don't care as long as I don't catch it."

"Mego and I had no time to mock Hego, because all of a sudden he seemed to remember again, what he wanted to show us worked and uplifted his bed with just one hand."

While Hego held the bed, with only one finger, his hand was surrounded by a blue glow, Mego said stunned to his sister: "Oh. Too late, I already caught it."
"But if it makes you feel better, you men don't have to suffer for yourself."
"So you see it too?"
"You mean that he's lifting a bed up, like a balloon or that his hand glows?"
"Both."
"Yes, I see it."
Hego threw the bed from one hand into another, like it was the most normal thing on earth.
"Cool, isn't it? It happened to me a few weeks ago for the first time. I was alone in the gym and practiced my basketball abilities. I was totally frustrated, because I never came even close to the basket and suddenly the glowing starts and I threw a ball so hard that he caused a hole in the ceiling. Then I tried to do this agAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!"
Hego glimpsed at the twins' bed and got almost scared to death. What he saw in it wasn't two, but six babies. Beause of the shock he lost the bed and as he tried to catch it again, he accidently hit it with his superstrength.

"It came right at Mego and me. Too fast to react aware. Under normal circumstances we had seen our parents again. But mercifully, this weren't normal circumstances."

Shego and Mego did't have time to think, their subconscious worked for them. Within a split second, both began to glow. Mego dodged the "missile" by shrinking himself to hamster size. Shego couldn't dodge, but she hit the bed protectively with her green glowing hand and broke it with one stroke into lots of pieces. Then it was silent. The siblings were standing glowing in their room and breathed jittery. Only the babies were okay. Meanwhile there were only two of them again in bed. A few seconds later Mr Pink knocked from outside at the door. This afreshed shock let Shego, Hego and Mego came back to their non-glowing normality.
"Is everything okay!? Hey! Say something!" Mr Pink called from outside.
Mego opened the door. Mr Pink came in, saw all the broken wood, formerly known as Mego's bed, and was for a few second speechless. It didn't happened often, but it happened once in a while. But when it happened, it never last long.
"So, what happened? And don't say that the bed is broken, because I can see that by myself. I wanna know how it happened."
"Mego jumped on it and it crashed", Shego said. "He became fat."
Mr Pink shrugged his shoulders and said: "Okay. Now he has to share a bed with one of you. This month, we don't got money for a new one, anymore. Have a nice day."
Mr Pink turned around and didn't come back that day.

Shego looked at the clock on the wall. It was almost noon.
"Are you hungry?"
"Uhm, yes, a little", Washington said demurring.
"Then shut off the camera for a moment."
"I did."
"Good. I'll call the roomservice. Order whatever you want, it's on me. Now you can turn on the camera again."
Shego didn't know that Washington never had put off the camera, and so this unique act of hospitality will forever be on film.
