Chapter 7

First Heroic Deeds (Team Go Begins, Part 7)

Shego, Hego and Mego jumped up and down in excitement.
„Hey, calm down“, said Vince. „Before you go outside, into the real world, there are a few things I would like to tell you.“ The siblings calmed down slowly – at least on the outside. „Well, it doesn't matter what happens, just remember your training. Nothing can happen to you. No, in fact you could die or get heavily injured, but if you remember your training and of course if you use the lessons you've learned, nothing bad should happen to you. But keep in mind that your training isn't finished yet! Maybe you will come into situations, in which you suddenly realize, that they are too big for you. If something like this happens, save quickly whatever you are able to save, but get the hell out of there! Your time will come. And it doesn't matter what happens, I'm proud of you. And if you turn around now, you will find for each one of us a little present behind you.“
The siblings turned around quickly, but there weren't any presents behind them. When they turned sorely disappointed back, the promised presents were lying in front of them.
„Gotcha“, Vince said with a smile. „Let's open them. There's something inside, which you really need.“
With an almost christmas-like joy, Shego, Hego and Mego ripped the wrapping paper from the boxes. But the joy disappears sometimes on christmas, when there are only clothes in the beautiful wrapped box. Like here.
„What's this?“ Mego asked.
„These are your supersuits. You don't need to have special powers to be a superhero, but you should have at least a suit.“
Shego held her suit with outstretched arms in front of herself and took a good look at it.
„Nice pattern. I like it.“
„Look“, Hego shouted full of joy, „the costumes got the colours of our glows. Mine is blue!“
„Yes, we see. Did you make them yourself?“ asked Mego.
„Certainly not. I can do many things, but I'm not a tailor. They are from Atwood, a tailor, here in Go City, who is specialising in suits for superheroes, unfortunately for villains too, from all around the world.“
„Is there really something like that?“
„Walk down the right back alley in Go City and you can find anything. Put them on.“
Vince didn't have to say it twice and and the siblings disappeared immediately in a locker room.
When they came back out and he saw his students for the first time in full dress, Vince sighed as proud as if they were his own children.
„Now you are no simple orphans anymore. Now you are Team Go.“
The members of Team Go looked at each other.
„Team Go?“ they asked synchronistic.
„Yes, the idea came to my mind while I was sitting on the toilet. I mean, all of your names end with 'go' and you protect Go City, so why not Team Go?“
„Why not the Super Go's?“
„Or Mego & Company?“
„Or 'The Little Smart One And The Two Idiots'?“
„You’re the idiot.“
„No, I'm not.“
„Yes, you are.“
„No.“
„Yes.“
„Hey, behave yourself. The Super Go's don't argue with each other.“
„But we are not the Super Go's“
Vince clapped his hands one time.
„So, are you ready for some heroic deeds?“
Suddenly all of the little, brotherly and sisterly disagreements were forgotten.
Hego asked: „What do we do first? Will we have to deal with this mysterious birdman, who terrorizes the city?“
„No, the bird is too difficult for you now. You will just go on patrol.“

„If you are, just like we were, hungry for real acts of heroism, 'going on patrol' is a really disillusioning job. To walk through the streets of Go City and hope, that maybe a burglar comes across your way, is under normal circumstances pretty boring. But it's been a while that my life has been normal at this point.“

It was night in Go City.
Like in every other large city in this world, crime was hiding in every corner.
But for any reason it didn't want to come out of any corner, that night.
Team Go was sitting on a roof garden. The house itself was in a doubtful area and the street, in which it was built, went, almost symbolic for this block, heavily precipitous.
They had been patrolling the streets for more than three hours, leaped dozens times from roof to roof, weren't afraid of sneaking into dark back alleys or looking at the backyards of loathsome bars, but there wasn't really anything to do for them.
Mego spit down the roof and looked after the dissapearing drop.
„Please stop that“, said his elder brother. „That's disgusting, unhygienic and I think, illegal too.“
„Okay, I’ll stop it. Hey, it looks like you defeated at least one crime tonight.“
Hego smiled a little. Shego was balancing on the edge of the roof.
„Sis, please get off there. That's dangerous.“
She just mumbled: „Yes, yes, I will“, and walked on.
„I'm serious. I don't want you to fall down.“
„Why is Mego allowed to do this, but not me?“
„When did Mego--“ Hego took a look to the side and saw Mego balancing on the edge of the roof, too. „Mego! And Shego! Get back on the roof, both!“
„Yes, yes“, they mumbled, jumped back on the roof and sat down, next to their brother.
Shego said after a few seconds: “We need one of those things, that let you listen to the police radio.“
Her brothers nodded silent, but agreeing.
A little later Hego said: „Shall we go on?“
„Okay.“
„Why not?“
The three superheroes got up and wanted to jump onto the next roof, when suddenly a man with a shotgun kicked the door to the stairways open.
„Whoever you are, hands up!“
Hego tried to pacify the man.
„No need to worry, we are--“
A shot, right in front of Hego's feet, interrupted him.
„Hands up! I won’t say it a third time and I won’t fire a second warning shot.“
The siblings did, what the man asked so friendly for.

„I don't wanna defend this man, but imagine three strange dressed up people, who are standing in the middle of the night on the roof of your house, which is incidently in a rotten and secluded spot. You would become nervous either. And when some people get nervous, they grab their guns.“

„You think you can do whatever you want, don't you?“
„If it is because of me, spitting down on the street, I would like to apologize honestly.“
„Accepted.“
The three put their hands down again, wiith a releasing sigh.
„I didn't say, that you can put your hands down!“ shouted the man and threatened them with his shotgun.
And so six hands went up again.
Hego asked: „What have we done?“
„Nothing yet. But it's about, what you could do.“
„What could we do?“
„Everything! But not with me!“
„You really don't have to worry. We are heroes! We are here to protect you!“
„Firstly I don't wanna be protected, secondly I don't believe you. There are no heroes anymore.“
„Well, that you protect your house brave with a gun in your hand, could some people see as heroic deed.“
„You're damn right, buddy. Did you really thought that you wouldn't attract attention in these circus costumes?“
„Okay, that's it for me“, Shego sighed.
She jumped with a enormous leap towards the man and pushed him down to the floor. He shot one time, but it just went up to the air and didn't hurt anyone.

„Unfortunately it was this shot, which caused the events for our first act of heroism. This single, missed shot, followed hundreds more. The block in which we were in, was one of the worst blocks in Go City. One of these, in which you shouldn't leave the house anymore, when it's getting dark. In all that time, in which there weren't any superheroes and the police didn't care, started the few people who were still living there to play it safe, well...kinda, got some guns and learned to sleep with just one eye closed. If they heard a shot, like the warning shot that the man gave in front of my brother's feet, they became suddenly wide awake and if there was a second shot, they were sure that, doesn't matter where the shot came from, it is the best you can do, to shoot like Rambo when he's drunk, completely senseless out of the window. In my opinion this behaviour is 60% funny and 40% sad.“

Within a split seocnd, all hell broke loose. Windows opened and for about minute this street was like a Wild West show. Just with automatic guns. While Shego held the man down on the floor, her brothers threw theirselves down, too.
The shots became silent. Hego got his head up again.
„Are they done?“ he asked.
The man nodded.
„Happens here often“, he said, „but usually a few second later comes one last shot from someone, who slept too long, or so.“
„I hope, nobody got injured or killed.“
„Nah, I don't think so. Would be the first time. I don't believe in miracles, but if I did, I would see it as one, that with all these blind shoot outs here, nothing ever really happened. But why am I so friendly to you? Get off of me, girl, and help me get up.“

„I know it sounds unlikely, but our great shooters didn't even had singing in the ears, from their action.“

The last shot, which has been announced by the man, came from somewhere.
„Hey, there it is. Like everytime.“
In addition to the shot followed an explosion.
„Oh, that's new.“

„This one shot hit the tank of a parked car, which was now obviously ablaze.“

The car wasn't far away from the house, on which's roof Team Go was.
Hego pointed with the finger at it and shouted: „There it is!“
„Thanks for telling us“, grumbled Shego, „we wouldn't have seen it under all that fire.“
Hego ignored the snappy response of his sister.
„We must extinguish it, before it spreads!“
Shego saw a hydrant on the other side of the street.
She even shouted: „I'm taking care of this“, then she jumped from the roof and slid down the gutter.
Hego sighed, touched.
„Our little sister on her first heroic act.“
„Yes, that's kinda cute, but do we really wanna let make her everything on her own?“
„I'm sure, she can handle it without us.“
„Indeed, but when we are just staying here, while she is doing the whole work, she won't let any opportunity out, to tease us with it.“
„Yes, that might be true. Let's go.“
Meanwhile Shego has reached the hydrant. She cut with a directed hit a hole in it and let the stream of water extinguish the car. Everything seemed to be okay now.
But it wasn't.
Close to the burning car, leaned a bike on a housewall. This was already noteworthy, because it was a real high-quality-product, which was not only parked in a place, that had a very bad reputation, as it was for a few times already mentioned, it also was also protected by a lock of minor value. The heat of the fire had no effect on the bike itself – it was not just a mountain-bike, it was a volcano-bike – but the lock got first heated up till incandescence and then cooled suddenly from the water. Effect: It bursted into thousands of small pieces and now, that that there were nothing that could hold the bike anymore, it rolled happily down the street.
„Do I see a bike over there?“ asked Mego, when he and Hego arrived at Shego.
She answered: „It looks so.“
„Who's riding it?“
„Nobody.“
„Where does it want to go?“
„On the street and then straight on.“
Hego ran after the bike.
„I better stop it, before it can cause any damage. By the way, good work, sis!“
„Thanks!“ she called after Hego and then turned to Mego. „More then a few dents or maybe some broken glass can't a bike without a rider cause, or not?“

„How wrong I was.“

Because of the street's heavy downgrade, the bike had gained speed, when all of a sudden a milktanker drove around the corner and got hit by the bike in the front.
The truckdriver, a man who took his job very seriously, that hadn't had a break for more than 24 hours, didn't get hurt. But he got almost scared to death – even because he was under the influence of some stimulants (which he all had of course on prescription) that doubled his perception – and ran screaming away, into the dark night.
He parked the truck alone and idling.
Well, it wasn't parked for long, but rolled down the street backwards.
Hego stood stunned in front of the quick leaving truck. He looked desperately back over his shoulder to his siblings.
„I think, Shego, we should help him now.“
„Yes, I think so, too.“
As they reached Hego, he had already clinged himself to the truck's cowling and tried to stop him.
Shego said: „I wouldn't hold it there.“
„And why not?“
The cowling got ripped off at one go and Hego landed hard on his butt, while the truck got faster.
„I'm not gonna say 'Because of this', if this makes you feel better.“
„Thanks. I hope Mego can make it better.“
Mego ran as quick as he could, jumped up on the moving truck and climbed through the broken windshield inside.

„Till that moment, I never knew that Mego could be brave.“

One thing came to his mind, when Mego sat in the cockpit: „Vince never showed us, how to handle a truck.“
He did the most obvious and stepped on the brakes.

„Big mistake! What he didn't know was, that you can't just step on the brakes, while driving a heavy loaded truck.“

Attended by a whispered „Uh oh“, the trailer was jack-knifing. When the whole vehicle also began to fall over, Mego had no other choice than saving himself with a jump.
The drop of the truck didn't improve the situation in any way. It had already so much momentum, that it just slittered with deafening noise.
Mego scratched his head and said to his siblings, when they arrived by his side: „We should think positive. The street is empty and milk can not explode. It can't, can it?“
„No, but this won't stop the people, who live in the house at the end of the street, from dying.“
„I got an idea how to prevent this.“
Once again Hego ran after the truck. It already became slower and would stop sooner or later, but it was clear to see, that it would hit the aforementioned house at the end of the street.
The people who lived in it, were meanwhile wide awake, but they couldn't go anywhere. The transverse sliding truck blocked the only escape way.
When Hego reached the truck, he made his legs glow. This gave him the power to jump far over it. While he was still flying, he let his hands glow and punched, when he landed, a deep hole into the street, which he expanded immediately to a huge ditch. At the last second Hego jumped out and the truck landed with lots of dust and noise in it.
It took some time, till the clouds of dust got clear and it took some more time, till everyone who was there, including Shego and Mego, realized, that Hego just saved everybody.
Mego slapped his brother's back.
„That was...great! Incredible!“
„Yes, congratulated Shego, „not bad.“
The onlookers and almost-victims around, began slowly to cheer and spend applause.

„We then disappeared as quickly and mysteriously as possible. As a superhero you must build up some kind of mystery around you.“

The siblings sneaked silently back into the orphanage. When they reached the basement, they couldn't hold it anymore and laughed and cheered as loud as they could. It didn't matter anymore. No one could hear them in the dark catacombs of the boiler room.
„Vince!“ they shouted. „Vince! Guess what happened!“
„I heard of it. Well done“, said Vince, while he climbed out under a pile of three-years-olds. „But you know what? I found out what kind of special powers the twins have.“
